The Dolphins were struggling on offense last year until Adam Gase made the call to abandon his running back rotation and hand the job over to Jay Ajayi. After a loss to the Titans, Ajayi ran for 204 yards in a win over the Steelers, and the offense was significantly better the rest of the way. Even during his breakout season, though, Ajayi was a big-play back who wasn’t inclined to keep the offense on schedule.
Competitiveness and quality of play have been an issue since the NFL began staging regular-season games in London in 2007. During that period, the average margin of victory has been 15.9 points. (That includes a 27-27 tie between the Washington Redskins and Cincinnati Bengals in 2016.) Eight of the 21 games have been decided by 20 or more points.
“When Florida has been really good, from a distance it has looked really fun,” Stricklin said. “I want it to be really fun.”
The previous connection between McCarron and Browns head coach Hue Jackson also should have helped get a deal done if there was one to be made. Jackson probably knows McCarron gives him a better shot to win than Cody Kessler, Kevin Hogan or DeShone Kizer, all of whom have failed miserably this season.
I would venture to guess Cincinnati wanted the Browns’ first round pick but MAYBE a second-round pick and/or a third-round pick to give up McCarron. Remember this Tweet from back in April…
He’s the more proficient pass-catcher as compared to Morris, but it’s no certainty that McFadden will step into a lead-back role. There is no perfect answer as to which running back one should roster, but McFadden should certainly be added in all leagues, as should Morris.
